BIOGRAPHY OF FREDERICK WEYERHAEUSER

Frederick Weyerhaeuser, a German immigrant, got his start in the lumber business at Rock Island, Illinois in 1858. He came to St. Paul in 1891, from where he directed a business empire that eventually stretched to the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

History of Weyerhaeuser Family and Associated Businesses

The history of the many Weyerhaeuser companies, and of the many Weyerhaeusers who participated in these companies, is too complex to be adequately dealt with in a short sketch. Researchers are referred to the book Timber and Men: the Weyerhaeuser Story, by Ralph W. Hidy, Frank Ernest Hill, and Allan Nevins (New York, 1963). This work includes an index, and also several appendices listing associated companies and their officers.

Within the Weyerhaeuser Family Papers are various historical sketches of individual companies. These sketches are noted in the Detailed Description and in the folder list, prepared by the Forest History Society, in Box 248 of the collection.

To help in identifying various members of the Weyerhaeuser family, a genealogy has been prepared showing the three generations of Weyerhaeusers who were active in the associated companies during the time period covered by these papers. An alphabetical list of the same persons complements the genealogy. The genealogy and alphabetical list are available in the repository with a printed version of this inventory. Further biographical information is found in Timber and Men, especially chapters I and XVII. Biographical materials in the papers are noted in the Detailed Description and in the folder lists in Box 248.

Another source of information is Fortune magazine, April 1934, containing four articles about the Weyerhaeuser companies and family. A copy of this issue is in the Minnesota Historical Society reference library.

A chart copied from this issue is in the respository with the printed version of the inventory. The chart illustrates the major business interests of the Weyerhaeuser family as of 1934.

ARRANGEMENT OF THE COLLECTION

The papers came to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1969 from the Forest History Society, New Haven, Connecticut. The original arrangement of the papers was retained by the Minnesota Historical Society.
The papers are arranged by files established by the Forest History Society. Arrangement of papers within the files varies, but they are in many cases arranged first chronologically (e.g., Correspondence, 1948) and then alphabetically (e.g., Correspondence, 1948, A-C1). Financial records (files 40-46) are arranged alphabetically by name of company, then alphabetically by type of record (annual reports, then annual statements), and finally chronologically (annual reports, 1909-1932).
Two additional boxes of Weyerhaeuser family correspondence were presented to the Society by Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser in 1972 and added to the Weyerhaeuser Family Papers.
A printed memorial booklet (photocopy) was added to box 246 in 1979.
A printed, oversize Weyerhaeuser family tree (1955) was received in 1986 and added as oversize collection +247.
A box of diaries kept by Louise Lindeke (Mrs. Rudolph M.) Weyerhaeuser (20 volumes) was added to the collection as box 247 in 1993.
A disassembled scrapbook kept by Frederick E. Weyerhaeuser during his years as an undergraduate at Yale University, together with some biographical newspaper clippings, was added to the collection as box 249 in August 2000.

RELATED MATERIALS

Several other groups of Weyerhaeuser business and family records are cataloged separately in the Minnesota Historical Society manuscript collections.
Annual reports for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and its successor, the Weyerhaeuser Company, are found in the Minnesota Historical Society reference library.

Return to the Table of Contents

An annotated folder list for the Weyerhaeuser Family Papers was prepared by the Forest History Society while the collection was in its possession. The list follows the arrangement of the papers and contains an annotation summarizing the contents of each folder of papers in the collection. The Folder List is filed separately from this inventory, as Box 248 of the collection. It may be requested in the same manner as any other box.
