				<head>Frederick Weyerhaeuser (1834-1914)</head>
<p>Frederick Weyerhaeuser, a German immigrant, began his career in the lumber

where he directed a business empire that eventually stretched to the Pacific

<p>The history of the many Weyerhaeuser companies, and of the many Weyerhaeusers who
participated in these companies, is too complex to be adequately dealt with in a
short sketch. Researchers are referred to the book <emph render="italic">Timber
and Men: The Weyerhaeuser Story, </emph>by Ralph W. Hidy, Frank Ernest Hill,
and Allan Nevins (New York, 1963). This work includes an index and several
					appendices listing associated companies' officers.</p>
<p>Within the Weyerhaeuser Family Papers are various historical sketches of
individual companies, which are noted in the Detailed
Description and in a folder list prepared by the Forest History
Society that is included in the collection.</p>
				<p>For biographical information, see <emph render="italic">Timber and Men</emph>,
especially chapters 1 and 17, biographical materials in the papers, and <emph render="italic">Fortune</emph> magazine's articles about the

<p>The collection consists primarily of business correspondence. Correspondents
include family members, lumbermen, bankers, officials of the Timber Securities
Company, government and railroad officials, and others. There are corporate histories
and annual reports, and there is information about financial and operational
matters, stockholders' meetings, corporate restructuring, taxation, conservation
and forestry, and other business matters. Financial records include budget
documents, financial and operating statements, and price lists. There is
personal correspondence of a number of family members, Weyerhaeuser genealogical
information, and a set of diaries (1894-1952) kept by Louise Lindeke
				Weyerhaeuser.</p>

			<head id="a4">ARRANGEMENT</head>
<p>In 1969, the first papers came to the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) from
the Forest History Society, New Haven, Connecticut. MHS retained the papers'
original file arrangement (File 1, etc.). Arrangement within the files varies but
mainly is chronological, then alphabetical. Financial records (Files 40-46) are
arranged alphabetically, first by company name, then by record type, and
				then chronologically.</p>
<p>Additional papers came from Fiduciary Counseling, Inc., the formal successor to
the informal Weyerhaeuser "family office," which was established to manage
extended Weyerhaeuser family members' assets. These papers are arranged by type,
				then alphabetically by company.</p>

						<unittitle>Louise Lindeke Weyerhaeuser Diaries:</unittitle>
					</did>
					<scopecontent>
<p>Louise Bertha (Lindeke) Weyerhaeuser (1870-1952) was the daughter of St.
Paul dry goods wholesaler Albert H. Lindeke and his wife Louisa. She
married Rudolph M. Weyerhaeuser (1868-1946), a son of St. Paul lumber
magnate Frederick Weyerhaeuser, on October 29, 1896. Rudolph
Weyerhaeuser headed the Northern Lumber Company (Cloquet, Minn.) from
1896 until 1945, and also held a number of other positions in the
Weyerhaeuser family business empire. Rudolph and Louise had one child,
Margaret Louise (1902-1981), who in 1926 married Walter Bridges
Driscoll. There were two grandchildren, Walter John and Rudolph
							Weyerhaeuser Driscoll.</p>
<p>The 18 diaries (1913-1952) kept by Louise Lindeke Weyerhaeuser contain
information about her personal activities and those of various family
members. They include information about the weather, trips, dinners and
entertaining, shopping excursions, church activities, visiting and
callers at Mrs. Weyerhaeuser's home, health problems, and births and
deaths in the family. There is information about the personal activities
of Louise's husband ("Rud"), her daughter Margaret ("Peg"), and the two
grandsons. Two travel diaries (1894-1912 and 1928-1935) contain
information about trips to various parts of the United States, to
Europe, and to the Middle East.</p>
