Declarations of intention and final papers are indexed separately. Within each section of the index, names are grouped alphabetically by the first letter(s) of the person's surname. Within each alphabetical grouping, names are listed chronologically in the order in which the naturalization documents were recorded.

Personal name index to declarations of intention (first papers), 1856-1951; final papers, 1875-1906; and petition and record (final papers), 1906-1954.

Each entry gives the applicant's name, the date of the document, and volume and page number. The entries in the final papers section also include the date of admission to citizenship and, beginning in 1907, the certificate of naturalization number.
