There are three indexes: (1) to final papers and loose naturalization papers; (2) to petition and record, 1907-1928 (vols. 1-4); (3) to petition and record, 1929-1954 (vols. 4-7). Each index is alphabetical by registrant's name.

Personal name indexes to final papers (second papers), vols. 1-2 and C-D, 1888-1906; loose naturalization papers, nos. 1-135, 1870-1888; and petition and record (final papers), vols. 1-7, 1907-1954.

The final papers are indexed by volume and page number; the loose naturalization papers by document number; and the petition and record by petition number. In addition, the entries for the final papers include the date of naturalization and those for the petition and record include the date and/or the number of the certificate of naturalization; these serve as supplemental indexing aids.
