DETAILED DESCRIPTION Naturalization Records Index (Microfilm SAM 137-I) SAM 137-I 1 Naturalization Records Index, 1875-1958.

Two indexes: 1) a card index to the Final Papers and the Petition and Record, 1875-1958, and 2) a set of naturalization certificate stubs that index only the Petition and Record, 1907-19058. Both the cards and the certificate stubs are arranged in alphabetical order by surname and given name. The cards index the Final Papers by volume and page number and the Petition and Record by volume and page number or by volume and petition number. The certificate stubs index the Petition and Record by volume and/or petition number. The cards and stubs also include the date of the naturalization or the number and the date of the certificate of naturalization, which serve as supplemental finding aids. Information on name changes and petition denials, which was recorded on the back of some cards and stubs, appears in the microfilm immediately following the frame containing the name and index citation.

Some certificate stubs for the years 1907-1926 give the volume and page number for the petitioner's declaration of intention.

The cards and certificate stubs were not checked for completeness or correct alphabetical order prior to microfilming. Researchers who do not find a card for a particular individual in its proper place should search the index further and/or consult the naturalization records, many of which contain indexes.
