Microfilm copy of personal name card indexes to: Final Papers, vols. A-E and minors vols. 1-2, 1872-1906; and Petition and Record (final papers), vols. 4-5, 1929-1944.

The Final Papers and the Petition and Record are indexed separately. The cards in each index are arranged in alphabetical order by surname and given name. The Final Papers are indexed by volume and page number. The Petitions are indexed by petition number. The cards also include the date of naturalization or the number and date of the certificate of naturalization, which serve as supplemental indexing aids. Information on name changes, which was recorded on the back of some Petition and Record cards, appears on the microfilm immediately following the frame containing the name and index citation.

The cards in each index were not check for completeness or correct alphabetical order prior to microfilming. Researchers who do not find a card for a particular individual in its proper sequence should search the index further and/or consult the naturalization records, many of which contain indexes.

Volume [A] of Declarations of Intention was originally given a beginning date of 1872. The Reference Department reported that forms beginning in 1867 were found in this volume, beginning on page 3 (pages 1-2 being 1871-1872.) The finding aids for originals and microfilm were revised; those on the microfilm were not refilmed.
