Christopher Columbus Andrews was born October 27, 1829, in Hillsboro, New Hampshire.
He attended Francetown Academy and Harvard Law School, and was admitted to the
Massachusetts bar before moving to St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1857. He served in the
Union Army, Minnesota Infantry, Third Regiment during the Civil War, advancing from
Captain to Major General. He was honorably mustered out on January 15, 1866. From
1869 through 1877, Andrews served as United States minister to both Sweden and
Norway, and from 1882 through 1885 as consul general to Brazil. He served as chief
fire warden, 1895-1905, state forestry commissioner, 1905-1911, and member of the
state forestry board, 1905-1922. Andrews lived his later years in St. Paul. He died
on September 21, 1922.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Compiled by Christopher C. Andrews during his career as the state's chief fire warden
and forestry commissioner, the photographs document forests and timber stands,
lakes, rivers, and logging and lumbering activities throughout Minnesota. Areas of
particular interest include Itasca State Park, Lake Superior Forest Reserve,
Burntside State Park, Cass Lake, International Falls, and the White Earth, Leech
Lake and Winnibigoshish Indian reservations. There are also several photographs
taken near Missoula, Montana, and documenting a September 1908 Chisholm area forest
fire. The major photographers identified are Andrews, A. B. Herrell, F. L. Hoxie,
and C. A. Schenck.

The main body of photographs, numbered 1-233, is denoted by the letter C. Three other
groups, labeled X, A, or H, contain similar subjects, dates, and photographers. The
X photographs, and possibly the A and H groups, were taken for the chief fire
warden's annual reports. While many of the photographs are untitled, undated, and
the identity of the photographer unknown, captions found in the annual reports
provided information for some of the images. That information has been noted in the
Detailed Description of the Collection. For the other unidentified photographs, a
description of the image, in brackets, has been provided. Gaps in the numbering
system can be accounted for by the discard of duplicate images. Location names have
neither been verified nor altered to reflect changes that may have occurred since
1909. Many, but not all, of the photographs are mounted on pressboard backings and
are accompanied by a negative. Negatives exist for the first 33 photographs in the C series.
