Government Records
There are two sets of files. Those for 1897-1950 (numbers 1-17945) are virtually complete. Those for 1951-1959, 2012 (numbers 17946-19905) were reviewed by Beltrami County District Court staff and files that did not have a permanent retention were destroyed according to the general records retention schedule for state courts. The permanently retained civil case files include the following matters: change of name, condemnation, eminent domain, judicial ditch, quiet title, torrens, trust, contested election, cases decided by the Appellate Courts, cases involving public entities, "treaty rights" cases, historically significant cases, and adoption cases. The court sealed the adoption case files. Criminal case files involving a felony case were permanently retained.
Also included with the files is an index of cases relating to applications for mother's pension and county allowance, juvenile court cases, and miscellaneous cases prior to June 1922 and select transcripts of trial proceedings. 1904-1951. The latter include several coroner's inquest proceedings, a number of suits involving railroad and lumber companies and local businesses, a disputed election to determine whether liquor sales should be prohibited (1916), and audits of Port Hope Township accounts (1921-1923).
