         <abstract label="Abstract:">Filipino Minnesotans speak about their experiences coming to
            Minnesota. The narrators discuss their personal stories of living in the Philippines and
            Minnesota. The project interviews a range of Filipinos from diverse backgrounds.
            Interviewed were conducted by Lita Malicsi. This oral history project is part of the larger Asian
            American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project and is a partnership between the
            Minnesota Historical Society and the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans. </abstract>

            <bioghist>
               <p><emph render="bold">Biographical Information:</emph> Belen Andrada was born in
                  Butuan in the southern Philippines. After World War II, Andrada finished college
                  with a bachelor's degree in math from Santo Tomas in Manila. She came to the
                  United States as a master's student at the University of Chicago. After marrying,
                  she moved to Minnesota and worked in area high schools. At the time of this
                  interview she continues to be active in the Filipino community.</p>
            </bioghist>

               <p><emph render="bold">Scope and Content:</emph> Subjects discussed include her
                  parents; growing up; World War II; the Japanese occupation of the Philippines;
                  college; immigrating; the Filipino community in Minnesota during the 1950s and the
                  evolution of the community since that time; family; discrimination against
                  Filipinos; and community involvement. Belen Andrada was also interviewed by Susan
                  March in 1978 for a separate oral history project done by the Minnesota Historical

                  born in Zamboanga City, Philippines. Shortly before the Japanese invaded the
                  Philippines, Victorino married and started a family. They hid in the mountains
                  during the Japanese occupation of the country. Alojado moved the family to
                  Minnesota in 1976 to escape martial law. </p>

                  Manila, Philippines. He was imprisoned by Ferdinand Marcos for his opposition to
                  martial law in the Philippines. After being released, Batica and his wife left the
                  Philippines for the United States. At the time of this interview, he was living
                  with his family in Minnesota, working for the Department of Transportation, and
                  serving as a leader in the Filipino community.</p>

                  old. He graduated salutatorian from Main Street School Performing Arts High
                  School, Hopkins, Minnesota. At the time of this interview he was a student at St.
                  Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and hoped to become a nurse anesthetist.</p>
