Typescripts and photographs containing biographical and historical
information on the Prairie Island Indian Community and, especially, on members
of the Rouillard and Wells families who settled there beginning in the
1880s.

The first item is a history (2 pp.) of the Prairie Island Community
related by Eliza Wells and translated by Norman Richard Campbell. It contains
information on Eliza, who was born in 1879 on the Santa Fe Reservation in
Nebraska; on her parents, Thomas and Julia (b. 1846) Rouillard, along with some
genealogical information on Julia's family; Dakota Conflict (1862) incidents;
the expulsion of the family and other Dakota to the Lower Brule in South
Dakota; their return to the Santa Fe; and their move to Prairie Island (1884),
where they purchased seven acres of land. The narrative is accompanied by a
newsprint photo of a group of Dakota women at Prairie Island, which includes
Eliza.

A very brief (1 p.) biographical sketch of Norman Campbell (b. 1932)
notes his schooling at Prairie Island and Red Wing; his World War II service;
and his election as president of the Prairie Island Indian Community council,
including a list of 1959 council members. A photograph of Campbell accompanies
the sketch.

An article by Harry Willis on the Prairie Island community, from the
<emph render="italic">Red Wing Daily Republican-Eagle</emph> (June 1958) gives
information on the origins of the Nebraska Santee Dakota, their expulsion from
Nebraska, and the relocation of many to Prairie Island.

A list of Indian names (1 p.) contains segments dated 1863, 1864,
1873, and 1874.

A description of the 60th wedding anniversary of Solomon (b. 1877) and
Eliza (Rouillard) Wells gives information on their children, Solomon's birth in
Sioux Falls, and on the celebration. It is accompanied by a newpaper clipping
with a photograph of the couple.
