		<head id="a3">SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE PAPERS</head>
		<p>Two letters, December 7, 1861 and March 5, 1862, by M. D. Peak,
		  cashier of Thorne's Bank, Hastings, Minnesota, to "Mr. Wood" [n.p.], contain
		  information on banking and economic conditions in the 1860s.</p><p />
		<p>The 1861 letter contains references to family, and details Peak's
		  plans to become a cashier and part owner of the bank of Green Bay, Wisconsin,
		  and gives information on the bank's prospects and his investment in it. The
		  1862 letter mentions his return from New York, the illness of his wife, and
		  economic conditions caused by the Civil War.</p>
