HISTORY OF INDIA ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA

The India Association of Minnesota was organized in 1973 as the India Club of Minnesota. In November 1982 the India Club was revitalized and its activities renewed, and in February 1994 the name was changed to the India Association of Minnesota.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

The records were primarily compiled by board members Neena Gada and Jagadish Desai and include minutes of board and committee meetings, correspondence, newsletters, Festival of Nations materials, information on events and programs organized by the association, miscellaneous materials, and a copy of the Minnesota Asian Indian Community Directory (1998), produced by the association. Brief information on the India Association of Minnesota Oral History Project appears in the records (ca. 1994 and 1999).

Activities of the India Association include operating a booth at the Festival of Nations; organizing India Day picnics, and Festival of India and youth events; sponsoring Asian Indian cultural and artistic programs; working with families adopting children from India; and community outreach both within and outside the Asian Indian community. The India Association has worked with organizations such as the International Institute of Minnesota, the Indian Music Society, the Indo-American Association, the School of India for Languages and Culture, and Parents of (Asian) Indian Children (P.I.C.).

The India Association of Minnesota participates annually in the Festival of Nations, which is produced by the International Institute of Minnesota and held in St. Paul. Included in these Festival of Nations materials are the India Association's food booth/cafe guidelines, operating instructions, and financial summaries; Festival of Nations forms, rules, and instructions; and some information on related exhibits, entertainment, and products sold at the Bazaar as part of the Festival of Nations.
