Ordination of Women in the Episcopal Church
Indianapolis Ind. May 22, 82.
My dear Bishop Whipple:
We have a case: A woman, of uncommon zeal, sectarian training, & recent acquaintance with the Church, but now well up in the Faith, asks for Holy Orders, or the most the Church can give her to authorize her to do missionary work for X [Christ] & His Ch. Is it not a sign of the times? Can you tell me what you did in reference to sending out some women workers? And can you find time to give me the grounds of your action? I have the matters in hand - virtually, while the Bishop is disabled; & I want lighter. Bp. Talbot expects to recover - God grant it! his relatives & friends fear the worst when hot weather comes. I share the fear. How are you? I never can tell you my love for you. I pray God to spare you. My kindest regards to Mrs. Whipple.
Yours faithfully
E.A. Bradley
Rt. Rev. H.B. Whipple, D.D.
