Introduction

The Harkin Store opened in 1871 and operated as a general store and post office for the riverboat town of West Newton. When the railroad bypassed the town, the store was forced to close with much of its unsold inventory still on the shelves, where it remains today. The site is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on County Road 21. The Harkin Store is managed by the Nicollet County Historical Society.
