“150 Years on Minnesota's Waters: Paintings from the Minnesota Historical Society's Art Collection” will be on view, Feb. 21 - May 23, 2013, at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona.
The exhibit is part of the MMAM’s 2013 Painting Series and is co-curated by Brian Szott, head of collections and curator of art at the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS.) "From border to border, Minnesotans have a deep and lasting association with its lakes, streams and rivers,” said Szott. “The very name of our state speaks to our relationship to water. "Mni Sota" translates from the Dakota language as, "the land where the waters are so clear they reflect the clouds." From the early days of exploration and trade to current interests in recreation and the environment, artists have reflected this bond in their art."
Some of the prominent historical artists in the exhibit include Seth Eastman, Francis Jaques, Ferdinand Reichardt (pictured above) and Adolf Dehn; and contemporary Minnesotans in the exhibit include Fred Anderson and Mary Jo Van Dell.
The MMAM Executive Director Andrew Maus says, “The 150 Years on Minnesota’s Waters exhibit is truly an exciting, win/win endeavor. The MMAM gets the opportunity to play a role in getting these artworks in front of our audiences, and MHS gets the opportunity to better connect to Greater Minnesota using its impressive collection. The MMAM’s accessible location on the Mississippi River in Winona, and its collections chock-full of Impressionist and Romantic masterpieces, is the perfect context for experiencing this diverse selection works inspired by Minnesota’s waters.”
