Historic Forestville Gets Ready for Harvest with Family Programs this October

Fall in Minnesota means harvest time and for two Saturdays in October the harvest is in full swing at Historic Forestville. Experience a 19th century harvest on Saturday, Oct. 5 and enjoy the sweet rewards of the harvest with Apple Butter Making Day on Saturday, Oct. 12.

When: Saturday, Oct. 5
Time: 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $7 adults, $6 seniors and college students, $5 children age 6-17; $1 discount for MHS members

Experience 19th century harvesting in southeast Minnesota. Visitors will learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting different varieties of crops through hands-on demonstrations. They will see corn harvesting, grain fanning, cider pressing, corn shelling, as well as quilting and apple pie baking. Children can harvest their own pumpkins to take home.

What: Apple Butter Making Day
When: Saturday, Oct. 12
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $7 adults, $6 seniors and college students, $5 children age 6-17; $1 discount for MHS members

Experience the fall activity of making apple butter the old-fashioned way. This day-long autumn event begins with boiling cider and apples in a 20 gallon copper pot and ends with sweet tasty homemade apple butter.

About Historic Forestville

At Historic Forestville, visitors can see 19th-century merchandise in the Meighen family store, discover what’s cooking in the kitchen and help the hired hand with chores in the garden and farm buildings. The historic village is located inside Forestville State Park, between Preston and Spring Valley, approximately 40 miles from Rochester or Austin. A State Park vehicle permit is required.
