In 1886, St. Paul citizens decided to hold a Winter Carnival to combat negative publicity about the area's weather in East Coast newspapers. Celebrate this tradition with special events at Society historic sites and museums. Here are five to start:

  1. Capitol Art and Artists Tour at the State Capitol
  2. Gaslight Tours at the James J. Hill House
  3. Winter Carnival Weekend and Beyond Boreas Puppet Show at the Minnesota History Center
  4. Look for Society freebies at the Sesquicentennial booth at the Landmark Center

SHARE YOUR MEMORIES

Richards Treat

We're collecting memories of Richards Treat, a now-vanished Minneapolis landmark. Did you work or eat there? Did you receive a care package of Richards Treat baked goods? Submit your memory and help us preserve a piece of the recent past. We may share these on our web site or in Minnesota History magazine.

THE SHIRT OFF MY BACK

Penguin shirtHundreds of people responded to our call for Munsingwear penguin polo shirts during a WCCO-TV special on the Society's collections (Dec. 11). As a result curators have added a variety of shirts with the Penguin logo to the collections, in an assortment of colors, and with great stories to go with them. Donors told how the polo shirt was a popular gift, purchased at a local men’s wear store, handed down and worn by multiple family members.

At one time, Munsingwear was the largest employer of women in the state. Just about everyone seems to know someone who worked for Munsingwear and remembers not only the Minneapolis plant and the outlet store, but the factories in Montgomery or Little Falls. Leave your thoughts on our discussion page. Thank you.
