Executive Director

Olmsted County Historical Society seeks an Executive Director responsible for developing and implementing overall vision and strategy. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. Outreach Coordinator

Goodhue County Historical Society seeks an outreach coordinator. Major responsibilities include educational programming, volunteer coordination, and publications. Special Projects Coordinator

Mississippi Department of Archives and History seeks a special projects coordinator (Historian II) for the Eudora Welty House in Jackson, Mississippi. Starting Salary:  $30,195 plus benefits. Contact Mary Alice White, 601-353-7762. Application.

Temporary Grants Assistant at MHS

Until a full time Grants and Field Programs Assistant is hired, Laura Kling will assist the State Grants-in-Aid program on a part time basis to help applicants meet the January 11 deadline for pre-applications. Her hours for December 17-18 will be 8:30 to 5. Starting January 2, her hours will be Monday 8:30 to 5, Wednesday 9 to 4:30, and Thursday 8:30 to 2. Call Laura at 651-259-3459.

Local History News after 18 months

After switching to the current HTML format, subscribers to this list for Minnesota's vibrant local history community has grown from just over 300 in June 2006 to 1,075 addresses currently. Please continue to send your news, notes, and discussions because your content makes LHN interesting to all.

Host a table at the tourism conference

Arts/culture organizations may "host" tables during Wednesday lunch at the Minnesota Tourism Conference and decorate them to promote your facility or program. To "host" the table is free, however there is a charge to attend the conference. Space is limited: first come, first served. Questions? Contact Gayle Junnila, 800-657-3637.

"An old-fashioned Christmas" appeared in the December 9, 2007 Winona Daily News, concerning the Houston County Historical Society's Christmas program over the weekend.

Power to rural Wadena

"Out to the outskirts" by Bob Zosel of the Wadena County Historical Society appeared in the December 6, 2007 Wadena Pioneer Journal. This is part 4 of Zosel's history of electrification in Wadena.

Holding steady in uncertain times

GuideStar released its survey of nonprofits conducted in October 2007. It shows overall contributions are up, as well as demand for services.

Minnesota newspapers to go online

Last week's LHN noted the Chronicling America project to digitize newspapers. Minnesota Historical Society received a grant to add 100,000 pages of Minnesota newspapers from 1880 to 1910.

Grant Deadlines

Culture and tourism grants

Iron Range Resources culture and tourism grants for nonprofits in the Taconite Tax Relief Area of northeastern Minnesota are due December 17, 2007.

Scholarships for training

American Association for State and Local History offers scholarships to its workshops. "Scholarships for New Professionals" are for those working in the field for three years or less. "Scholarships for Minority Professionals" are for those who represent a minority group. Two recipients in each program will receive workshop registration fee reimbursement and a one year individual AASLH membership. Applications are due January 15, 2008.

2008 Explore Minnesota Tourism Conference

This conference will be at Alltel Civic Center in Mankato on January 22-24, 2008. Registration:  $189 if received by January 10, 2008. Regular Registration cost is $215 and applies to all registrations and/or payments postmarked after January 10.

Field Note

Suburban history organizations have an important role to play in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. One goal of that role is to connect a large number of temporary citizens with the community and its longtime population.
