Local Events

Ramsey County Historical Society tour

The Ramsey County Historical Society has scheduled a member event at newly renovated, Cass Gilbert designed house at 318 Summit on Thursday, June 7, 2007. The event will include remarks by local architectural historian Paul Clifford Larsen, tours by architect Tom Blanc, silent auction and interiors by the American Society of Interior Designers. The event is a fundraiser for the RCHS and costs $40 per person or is free to those who join the Society. For more information call 651-222-0701.

TRACES program

German-French TV stations and a Munich documentary producer are headed to the Upper Midwest in early June to film an unknown chapter of WWII history. Guest speakers from across the U.S. will meet them, to share their families' wartime experiences. They were among the 15,000 German-American internees imprisoned by the U.S. Gov't in 60 camps and centers. Some of the internees were Jewish refugees erroneously put in camps here. TRACES Center for History and Culture is hosting the film project, which will follow former internees on June 7- 8 to showings of TRACES' mobile exhibit about internment in northwest Wisconsin, before a public program starting at 11:00 on June 9, 2007 at Landmark Center in St. Paul. Author available to speak at historical society events

Krista Finstad Hanson, the author of the recent MHS Press publication Minnesota Open House, a guidebook to Minnesota Historic House Museums, is available to give slide presentations and do book signings at historical organizaton events this summer and into the fall. The book can be sold in historical organzation's gif/museum stores with the 40% retail dividend going to the organization. Historic Lighthouse available

The Army Corps of Engineers announces the availability of the Duluth Harbor South Breakwater Inner Light Tower, a skeletal steel watchtower built in 1900-1901. This property is being made available at no cost to eligible entities defined as federal agencies, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, or community development organizations, for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes. See Notice of Availability. Any eligible entity with an interest in acquiring the property should submit a letter of interest by July 2, 2007.

Association of Midwest Museums salary survey

The Association of Midwest Museums (AMM) has extended the deadline for participation in the 2007 a salary survey until Friday, June 22, 2007.  All participating institutions will receive a free copy of the survey report.  An electronic copy and hard copy of the survey are available. Scholarships to attend AASLH annual meeting in Atlanta

The Small Museums Committee of the American Association of State and Local History is offering two $500 scholarships for individuals to attend the 2007 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Applications must be postmarked or received (via email or fax) by June 30, 2007 to be considered. This scholarship is available to a full or part time paid or volunteer employee of a small museum (annual budget of up to $100,000) and will cover the cost of registration, plus $300 to assist with travel and/or lodging expenses. The scholarship is open to AASLH members and is a benefit of membership. Associaton of Midwest Museums annual conference

The Association of Midwest Museums' annual conference is scheduled for September 25-28, 2007 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, MI. The conference theme is "No Museum is an Island."

National Trust for Historic Preservation conference in St.Paul/Minneapolis

Program information about the National Trust's annual conference in the Twin Cities, October 2 - 6, 2007 is now available online. The deadline for early bird registration rates is July 31, 2007.

Field note

The American Association for State and Local History publishes Technical Leaflets on a variety of subjects useful to historical organizations. They can be ordered online. Some are available as electronic downloads. Discounts are available to AASLH members.
