Monthly Museum Sampler- December 2007

Minnesota Association of Museums presents a special tour of the James J. Hill House on Thursday December 13, 2007 at 2:30 p.m., at 240 Summit Avenue, St. Paul. Hill House delivers a wide range of theatrical programs from period ghost stories to Victorian poetry all set in the 116 year-old mansion. RSVP to Peter Olson, 651-225-6037.

Museum media award program

AAM Media and Technology Committee recognizes outstanding achievement in museum media in the 19th annual MUSE Awards competition. Apply online on the AAM Media and Technology Website from December 3, 2007, to January 11, 2008. Only $25 per entry.

Small Museum award program

The Small Museum Association, Inc. (SMA) annually presents two awards: The Hunter-Burley Award for individual outstanding contributions to the advancement of public access and professional growth for an individual institution; and, The Small Museum Association Award for individual outstanding contributions to the advancement of funding for, professional growth within, and/or the accessibility of information to the small museum community on a regional or state level. Nominations must be postmarked by December 1, 2007. Contact John Pentangelo for a nomination form or more information.

AASLH Awards program

Minnesota garnered 9 of 81 awards given by AASLH in 2007. Contact Ben Leonard to nominate a Minnesota history project from 2007. Nominations are due March 1, 2008. Also, document projects marking the state's sesquicentennial throughout 2008 for the 2009 awards program.

Program available

Denis Warta generously offers a 30-minute presentation entitled "Hermann - the Man, the Battle, his Monuments" that connects an audience to the 2009 German-American observance of the 2,000th anniversary of German tribal victory over Roman invaders. Minnesota Sesquicentennial Round 2 Micro Grant Program deadline is December 7, 2007.

Alderson Internship Grant

Applications are due December 15, 2007 to AASLH. This is an opportunity to receive a stipend to support an intern.

Distance learning opportunities

University of Victoria's Cultural Resource Management Program will offer several online education courses for cultural institutions starting in January. Classes are Programming, Exhibitions and Management; Curatorship: Contemporary Perspectives; Public Programming; Heritage Resource Conservation; and, Determining Significance of Historic Resources. Field Note

Many local historical organizations document local Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting history. Scouting history is also preserved by the North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting in North St. Paul, Minnesota. The preservation of scouting history is an opportunity to collaborate with the North Star Museum.
