Doug Ohman at Hanover

Doug Ohman, the author of such popular photographic books about barns, churches, cabins and courthouses in Minnesota, will speak Tuesday April 8, 2008, at the Hanover Historical Society’s monthly meeting. Contact Kathy Eiden, 763-497-0471 (evenings).

Hair workshop in Anoka

Anoka County Historical Society presents a "hair workshop" on Monday March 10, 7-9 p.m.  Learn the traditions and stories behind the making of human hair into jewelry or decorations for the home and-for those willing to try their skill-provide some hands-on experience in making their own "parlor ornament".  Cost is $10 and includes materials.  ACHS members receive a discount.

Omeka available for public download

The Center for History and New Media and the Minnesota Historical Society announce the public beta release of Omeka, the free and open-source software that provides museums, historical societies, libraries and individuals with an easy-to-use platform for publishing collections and creating attractive, standards-based, interoperable online exhibits.

50th for Frank Lloyd Wright gas station

Carlton County Pine Journal's February 21, 2008 issue detailed the Carlton County Historical Society's plans to observe the 50th anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed gas station.

Input needed on federal museum funding

Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice cordially invites participation in the upcoming hearings on museum funding sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IMLS seeks written testimony about the effectiveness of current local, state, and federal funding programs across the nation that help museums care for cultural heritage, provide life long learning, and enhance civic engagement. Please send your written testimony or your intention to appear to Celeste Colgan by March 3, 2008, 5 p.m. ET. Written testimony should be no more than 1500 words and speak to effectiveness of current public funding mechanisms, gaps that need to be addressed to assure high quality museum services, and/or alternative funding mechanisms that should be considered in the future.

Scriptwriting and history in Fergus Falls

Fergus Falls Daily Journal of February 25, 2008 details a collaborative project between the Otter Tail County Historical Society and the Fergus Falls School District to use local history in scriptwriting in honor of the state's 150th anniversary.

War of 1812 Symposium

Minnesota Association of Museums conference

"Mix and Match: Minnesota Museums Collaborate" is the theme of the MAM conference on Monday May 19, 2008 at the University of Minnesota Continuing Education Center on the St. Paul Campus. Online Registration will be available after March 1.

Area Museums Meeting
