New Grants Assistant at MHS

Minnesota Historical Society's Local History Services welcomes Melinda Hutchinson as Grants and Field Programs Assistant working with the Minnesota State Grants-in-Aid program and local historical organizations. Melinda gained experience working at a range of historical organizations, such as Heritage Hill State Park and the Neville Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum in Rockford, Illinois, and the Sherburne County Historical Society in Becker, Minnesota. Melinda will begin her duties on February 1, 2008.

Office Administrator

Anoka County Historical Society seeks a part-time Office Administrator for bookkeeping, membership records management, staffing the reception desk, and other administrative duties, 25 hours per week. Knowledge of Quickbooks software and MS Office Programs is preferred. New society and website

Hermann Monument Society/Hermanns Denkmal Verein recently began, and now numbers 225 members. The organization is preparing to observe the 2,000 anniversary of Herman's victory over the Roman Empire in 9 A.D. For further information, contact Denny Warta.

Nominations sought

The 63rd annual AASLH Awards Program seeks projects to recognize. Minnesota has a tradition of garnering multiple awards. For details contact Ben Leonard, 507-934-2160. Nominations are due March 1, 2008.

Minnesota Archaeology Research Grants

Council for Minnesota Archaeology offers the Riaz Malik Student Research Grant. Applications are due January 25, 2008 to David Mather, 651-259-3454.

Save Our History Grants

Save Our History grant program will award grants of up to $10,000 to fund partnerships between history organizations and schools or youth groups. History museums, historical societies, preservation organizations, historic sites, libraries, archives, and other historical organizations are all eligible to apply. Due: Friday June 6, 2008.

Upcoming Conferences and Workshops

Joint museum association meeting

Association of Midwest Museums and Mountain Plains Museum Association will meet together October 21-24, 2008, at the Hotel Phillips in Kansas City, Missouri. Proposals for sessions are due January 18, 2008.

Midwest Archives Conference Annual Meeting

Midwest Archives Conference annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.  The meeting will convene at the Brown Hotel.  First-time attendees can apply for a scholarship; the application is available on the website and must be submitted by February 1, 2008.

Field Note

Small lobby exhibits can spark public interest in other exhibits, as this one on the city of Cologne's 125th anniversary at the Carver County Historical Society in Waconia. Other organizations use small exhibits in local businesses and public venues to connect citizens with history, and their own organization.
