Lincoln program in Northfield
Rice County Historical Society will celebrate President Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday at First United Church of Christ, 300 Union St., Northfield, on February 12, 2009, at 7 p.m. Experience Civil War-era music, re-enactments of Lincoln's speeches and a display of Lincoln and Rice County Civil War artifacts, including a Rice County Civil War battle flag. Museum store product safety
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, as passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush in 2008, mandates reduction of lead in items for those 12 and younger. CPSIA becomes law on February 10, 2009.

Nonprofit status in jeopardy
GuideStar detailed the underwhelming lack of response to the new requirement from the Internal Revenue Service for organizations with gross receipts less than $25,000 to file the 990-N. As of January 26, 2009, only 67 historical organizations in Minnesota had filed for tax year 2007, of an estimated 250.

American Association for State and Local History presents this 2.5 hour online course that may be completed at any time between March 2-30, 2009. $40 for AASLH members.
When all other avenues to preserve a building have been exhausted, one good practice prior to loss of the building (after documentation) is to offer parts of the building to salvage companies. Often salvaged parts, including doors, windows, light fixtures, and more, will find new life as a replacement part for a rehabilitated building.
