Statewide Plan

Help shape Minnesota's next statewide historic preservation plan!
A New Season: Preservation Plan for Minnesota's Historic Properties 2012-2017 available now for review on the
Minnesota SHPO website. Written comments accepted through October 26, 2011.

Over 100 of your colleagues have checked this out--find out why, and be sure to leave your comments, concerns, or praises to fold into our collective efforts for the next five years.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants

Small Grants Deadline
Applications for the next small (Fast Track) grants deadline is this Friday October 21, 2011. Grants Office staff are available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to answer questions or help navigate the new grants portal. Don't procrastinate--setting up a login for first-time users can take up to a day turnaround, and it does take some time to complete a competitive application.

Grants Portal Tip
Some applicants may have trouble uploading documents to the grants portal. Although the portal was initially set up to be compatible with any of the main internet browsers, it functions best with Google Chrome. Grants Office staff recommend that applicants download Chrome for use with the grants portal--it's free, and you are not required to make it your default browser, so all your regular browser settings would remain as-is.

From the Blog

Miss out on Preserve Minnesota, the Statewide Historic Preservation Conference? Not a problem. We have recorded many of the sessions and will be posting them on the State Historic Preservation Office's blog as we finish editing each of them.

PODCAST - Keynote Address: Preservation Doesn't Cost - It Pays! Part 1

Bob Yapp gives practical, humorous and cutting edge advice on the economic benefits of historic preservation. Learn how to counteract property rights arguments using cost comparisons between rehabilitation and new construction projects.

PODCAST - Historic Tax Credits: What's the Big Deal About Small Deals?
Tax credit projects are complex no matter what their size. Smaller projects (under $1 million) can be especially challenging. This session provided an update on Minnesota’s State Historic Tax Credit program and examined several smaller Minnesota projects. Panelists discussed why small deals are so challenging, how to structure them, and what elements need to be in place to attract investors.

Facebook Findings

Minnesota Local History fans number 673, incidentally the approximate birth year of the Venerable Bede, monk, author, scholar, and not least, historian.
