History Matters

History Matters DayHistory Matters Day at the Capitol
Join history fans in the State Capitol Rotunda on Monday February 20, 2012, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to show legislators that History Matters! Each year, historians gather at the Capitol to learn more about history activities across the state, and to let legislators know about the great educational work taking place with the help of state general fund dollars, Legacy funding, and capital budget dollars.

Minnesota Historical Society will provide free parking and shuttle service from the History Center (Kellogg Boulevard entrance) from 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you are not able to join us on February 20, please take a few minutes to send a note to your legislators. For more information, contact , 651-259-3130.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants

Small Grants Deadline
The next deadline for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants small grants round will be Friday February 17, 2012. Applications must be submitted via the grants portal before midnight on that date. Contact the Grants Office with questions.

Fall 2011 Mid/Large Update
If your organization received notice that the Historic Resources Advisory Committee awarded you a Fall Mid/Large grant, look for the contracts to come in the mail within the next week or two. Be sure to sign all copies and return. The Grants Office will return a fully executed copy to you for your files.

Field Note

Hastings State Hospital

Dakota County Historical Society, South St. Paul MN, is collecting the recollections and experiences of staff and patients of the former Hastings State Hospital (1900-1978), an institution committed to the treatment and care of those suffering from mental illness and chemical dependency.

DCHS seeks twenty former patients and staff who are willing to share their experiences for this oral history project. Contact Heidi Langenfeld, Jessica Bierbrauer, or Miranda Sieh, 651-437-7055, for more information or to assist with the project.
