Field Note

Stillwater Lift Bridge
Documenting significant change for communities is something that history organizations are best equipped to do.

Washington County Historical Society executive director Brent T. Peterson marked the passage of the St. Croix River Crossing bill, which will allow construction of a bridge that meets modern transportation needs. He holds a copy of the Stillwater Gazette newspaper from July 1, 1931, the day the Stillwater Lift Bridge, since listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was dedicated. Peterson and the Washington County Historical Society have carefully documented this lengthy story up to this latest milestone.

With Peterson are State Representative Kathy Lohmer (left) and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (center).
