Upcoming Grant Deadlines
Mark your calendars for these upcoming Legacy grants deadlines:

  • Mid/Large pre-applications (required): June 1, 2012; final applications: July 27, 2012
  • Small grants: June 15, 2012

This will be the only mid/large grant round for Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013). Additional small grant deadlines will be added soon. Contact the Grants Office with questions or for more information.

Spotlighted MHCG Project
Gunflint Trail Historical Society Oral History Project
Recipient: Gunflint Trail Historical Society
Funding Amount: $5,200
Project Overview
GTHS hired a contractor who: 1. Transcribed 32 recorded oral interviews of residents of the Gunflint Trail. 2. Conducted further interviews (to be recorded and transcribed as well) of many more area residents, some in their eighties and nineties. 3. Digitized all oral histories and transcriptions and entered them into PastPerfect Software.

Genealogy Conference

News

Volunteer Appreciation
Local History News ran the question "What is your organization doing to honor your volunteers?" in the April 4 issue. Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul MN, responded: their 2200 volunteers "will receive an electronic greeting card when they check in for their shift. Supervisors will provide individual acknowledgement to the volunteers and interns under their direction. Special recognition programs will be held in May and June."

Field Note

U.S.-Dakota War Exhibit
Brown County Historical Society, New Ulm MN, is diligently working on their new exhibit, "Never Shall I Forget," Brown County and the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. To honor this history, BCHS is planning a new Dakota War exhibit for the entire third floor of the museum.
Hundreds of artifacts, photographs, stories, and images--many never exhibited before--will be used to tell the story of the war. Save the date for the exhibit opening, Tuesday August 21, 2012. For more information, call 507-233-2616.
