Grants Deadlines
Upcoming grants deadlines for the Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants small (Fast Track) grants are as follows:
  • Friday November 9, 2012
  • Friday January 11, 2013 (pending funding)

Spotlighted Project: World War I Canteener Research and Manuscript

Recipient: American Red Cross Twin Cities Area Chapter
Funding Amount: $7,000

Project Overview
Hundreds of Minnesota women served on the French Front during World War I as volunteers for organizations such as the Red Cross. Their stories are often overlooked by history. The grand niece of Alice O'Brien, daughter of William O'Brien, has researched and developed a manuscript that combines chapters about Alice's life before and after the war with her letters home from the front during her service in France. The story is a personalized telling of what women volunteers experienced as Canteeners for the Red Cross.

Field Note

2012 AASLH

AASLH Annual Meeting
Many history colleagues from Minnesota last week attended the 2012 American Association for State and Local History Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City UT.

MHS Director & CEO, D. Stephen Elliott, seen here at the podium, completed his term as chair of AASLH. Lynne Ireland, deputy director at the Nebraska State Historical Society, succeeds him as chair. The 2013 meeting will be in Birmingham AL, September 18-21, 2013 - plan on attending.

Annual meetings at every level from local to national demonstrate the power of history through the commitment of organizations to send representatives, the independent historians who attend on their own, and the wonderful innovation in best practices that results from gathering. Missed Salt Lake? Attend the annual meeting and conference of the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums on November 9, 2012, in Prior Lake MN.
