Legacy Amendment Updates

Advisory Committee To Meet
Historic Resources Advisory Committee (HRAC) will hold its first meeting on Tuesday September 15, 2009 from 9 to 2 in the Irvine Room at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. This is the initial organizational meeting of the committee.

Advisory Committee Members Announced
Fifteen members have been appointed to the Historic Resources Advisory Committee. Members come from a variety of disciplines and from all areas of the state. The committee consists of thirteen active and two ex-officio members: Ram Gada (Chair), New Brighton; Abbot Apter, Duluth; Brenda Child, Minneapolis; Patricia Conley, St. Paul; Tamara Edevold, Bagley; Martha Kaemmer, St. Paul; Kris Kiesling, Roseville; William Latady, Tower; Mark Peterson, Winona; Peter Reis, White Bear Lake; Chris Schuelke, Fergus Falls; Carolyn Sundquist, Duluth; Benjamin Vander Kooi, Luverne; and ex-officio members Edward Stringer, MHS President, St. Paul; Missy Staples Thompson, MHS Treasurer, St. Paul.

Civil War Weekend at LeDuc
LeDuc Historic Estate in Hastings MN hosts Civil War Weekend, September 12 to 13, 2009 from 10 to 5. Free admission to members, military personnel with ID, and children under 5. Adult admission $10; seniors $9; students to age 18, $5.

Genealogist at Reads Landing
Wabasha County Historical Society hosts Frances Passe, genealogist, at Reads Landing School Museum, Reads Landing MN. She will provide tips on doing family research, especially German and Dutch ancestry. Sunday September 13, 2009 from 1 to 4 p.m. Contact Mary DeRoos for more information.

Czech and Slovak Festival

T-Rex Traveling Exhibit in Stearns County
Stearns History Museum will host "A T-Rex Named Sue," a traveling exhibit from the Field Museum in Chicago IL. Exhibit opens September 20, 2009 and closes January 3, 2010. The museum will host expanded hours during the exhibit run. Call toll-free 866-253-8424 for more information.

Bus Trip to Titanic Exhibit
Stearns History Museum hosts a bus trip to the Science Museum of Minnesota to see "Titanic: the Artifact Exhibition" and Omnitheater presentation "Titanica." Bus departs Stearns History Museum at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday September 22, 2009. Cost: $65 members, $70 nonmembers. Call for Papers
Midwest Open-Air Museums Coordinating Council (MOMCC) and Mountain-Plains Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) are soliciting papers and session proposals for the Spring 2010 conference "Are we there yet? Traveling the trails of yesterday and today." Conference will be held in Olathe KS, March 4, 5, 6, 2010. Send proposals to no later than November 1, 2009.



Grant Deadlines

Fellowship for Registrars Symposium
Small Museum Administrators' Committee of the American Association of Museums (SMAC-AAM) offers one fellowship to the 3rd International Registrars Symposium in Chicago IL, November 6 to 8, 2009. Award includes registration plus $300 to assist with travel and hotel costs. To apply submit a letter (maximum 2 pages) discussing current responsibilities, activities and career goals. Include resume, proof of museum's budget size, and letter of support from your institution. Deadline: September 25, 2009. Mail to , 1103 East Redondo Circle, Tempe AZ 85282.

Fellowship for Webinar Series
Small Museum Administrators Committee of AAM offers one $25 fellowship for each of the 2009 AAM Museum Essentials webinar series. Fellowships also good for on-demand version of previous webinars. Submit online application.

CAP Applications Available
Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) applications are now available online. CAP provides small to mid-size museums of all types with a general conservation assessment of their collections, environmental conditions, and facilities. Contact , 202-233-0800, for more information.

New Library Hours at MHS
To serve visitors better in the midst of a reduction in the Minnesota Historical Society's operating budget, hours for the library will change to reflect highest demand visitation times. Effective Tuesday September 8, 2009, new hours will be Tuesdays, noon to 8; Wednesdays through Fridays, noon to 5; Saturdays, 9 to 4; and Sundays, noon to 4. Closed Mondays and holidays.

Adopt-a-Picket Fundraiser
Friends of the Cemetery, a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery announce the kickoff of the Adopt-a-Picket Fundraiser. They hope to raise $100,000 toward the restoration of the cemetery's steel and limestone pillar fence.

Blue Earth County Historical Society renovated their office space and made room for a more open, inviting gift shop. Making space for interesting merchandise displays can boost sales and boost your organization's income. According to the Museum Store Association, the median net sales per square foot for museum stores is $212.
