Enactors of War of 1812

Field Note

Anniversaries abound in the next few years. While most attention will be paid to the sesquicentennials of the U.S. Dakota-War of 1862 (2012) and the American Civil War (2011-2015), the national bicentennial of the War of 1812 will also be marked.

Minnesota essentially was lost during the war, and regained during the peace negotiations. Roughly a 1,000 veterans of that war settled the state, and perhaps as many or more veterans on the British side lived within Minnesota's borders during and after the war. Numerous land patents issued to US War of 1812 veterans were used to claim land in Minnesota.

Above, privates from the Mississippi Volunteers (UK) and Capt. Zachary Taylor's Company (US) at a Historic Ft. Snelling event. In what ways might you observe this bicentennial?
