Vintage Base Ball Season Opens
The St. Croix Base Ball Club will begin its season in Lake St. Croix Beach MN at Pettit Park against the Afton Red Socks on Sunday May 16, 2010, 2 p.m. The club plays by 1860s rules and is a program of the Washington County Historical Society. Free.

New exhibit in Anoka
Join the Anoka County Historical Society on Tuesday May 18, 2010, to open its new exhibit, "Safe for Democracy," 7 p.m. Free.

Remember the Polio Epidemic
Look back at the impact the polio epidemic had in Minnesota with residents of Denmark Township on Tuesday May 18, 2010 at St. Mary's Episocopal Church Guild Hall, 7 p.m. Sponsored by the Denmark Township Historical Society. Free.

The Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County at the Hjemkomst Center will offer $1 off admission on Tuesday May 18, 2010 in honor of International Museum Day.


Visitor Participation Talk with Nina Simon
Nina Simon, author of "The Participatory Museum" and the blog Museum 2.0, will give an informal talk at the Walker Art Center on June 4, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. Simon will discuss visitor participation in museums, libraries and other cultural organizations.

Upcoming Deaccessions
The History Center at Olmstead County is undertaking a collections management project that will include the deaccessioning of items from the collection. Institutions will have the opportunity to request items from the deaccession list. The list will be available online on May 15, 2010. Use the Login ID: Burt Eaton and password: Curator.

"Preserving the American Historical Record Act"
Read about this new legislation, introduced on May 3, 2010 in the U.S. Senate to support archives and the preservation of historical records at the state and local level. If you're a Facebook member and want to show your support for PHAR, join the group "Support the Preserving the American Historical Record Bill (HR 2256)."

National Housing and Rehabilitation Association seeks nominations for the 2010 J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation. Nominations are due July 9, 2010, and will be presented at the organization's fall meeting in Boston MA.

Klan History Sought
Elizabeth Dorsey Hatle would like to hear from historical organizations in Minnesota that care for objects related to Ku Klux Klan history, or those that have research materials related to this uncomfortable but important part of the state's history. She is also available to present a program on this subject.


Field Note

Vickie Wendel visits the National Archives

Vickie Wendel, program manager at the Anoka County Historical Society, visited Washington DC to conduct research at the National Archives and at the Daughters of the American Revolution research library. While there, she attended a new Civil War sesquicentennial exhibit. Sometimes local historians must travel long distances to discover something about local history.
