Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants

Legacy Report Available

The Legacy Strategic Report that many colleagues in the local history community contributed to in 2012 was published late last week.

Spotlighted Project: Index, Printing, and e-book for Northern Slave, Black Dakota

This grant completed the publication phase of Northern Slave, Black Dakota: The Life and Times of Joseph Godfrey by Walt Bachman in a hardcover first edition of 1,000 copies. The book was released in February 2013. E-book and accessible-format versions like Large Print and Braille were released in March 2013.

This book is a thoroughly researched account of the events of 1862 through the eyes of Joseph Godfrey, cites many primary sources not previously examined by scholars, and will be essential reading for many years to come for anyone wishing to study Minnesota’s early African-American history, slavery in a supposedly free territory, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, or the trials that followed that war.

Recipient: Pond Dakota Heritage Society
Funding Amount: $6,900

MNHS and Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps seek to evaluate the volume of work on historic properties, the manner in which you pay for work, and your impression of corps-type labor for such work. Your responses from the survey will shape a more coordinated response and, hopefully, better care of historic resources in the state.

Click the link below to access the survey; expected time of completion is 10-15 minutes.

Two surveys completed by Friday February 28 will be randomly selected to win a $50 Gift Card each.

The survey is completely anonymous, unless you choose to share your name and contact information with us either seeking assistance or to enter the drawing.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help us with our study.

Feel free to forward this to others who would have valuable input.
