Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants

 

June Grant Recipients Announced
Sixty-eight Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants of up to $10,000, totaling $420,777 in 35 counties, were awarded from the June round of grant applicationsA number of grants in this cycle were awarded to support scholarships to attend the national meeting of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), which will be held in St. Paul September 17-20, 2014.
 
Spotlighted Project: Smith Lake Townsite & Cemetery Marker
Creation and placement of an historic marker to denote the site of the former settlement of Smith Lake, Minnesota and the Smith Lake Cemetery, located between Cokato and Howard Lake in Middleville Township (along the BNSF railroad line).
 
The project created and placed a historic marker to note the location of the former townsite of Smith Lake, Minnesota. This marker also serves to note the Smith Lake Cemetery, the final resting place for over ninety residents of the community and surrounding area, the gravestones and related makers were destroyed in the mid-1940s, with the location now being a farm field.
 
Funding Amount: $500
Recipient: Cokato Historical Society

Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission announces August 31, 2014 is the deadline to submit your park or trail for regional designation by the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission. 

 
Minnesota Reflections Hits 200,000
Minnesota Reflections reached 200,000 digital objects this summer. Two new contributors brought us over 200,000: The Saint Paul Almanac and Quatrefoil Library. More than 160 cultural heritage organizations helped reach this milestone.

Legacy Research Fellowship 

Minnesota Historical Society announces Legacy Research Fellowship applications are due October 1, 2014. The fellowship is designed to support research on Minnesota history that is conducted at the Gale Family Library at the Minnesota History Center. Fellows will work at the library and interact with MNHS staff.

Yesterday, Tuesday August 5, 2014, the American Swedish Institute reached out to their surrounding community and hosted a "Night to Unite" (known in many communities as National Night Out) block party which reminds us that events like this are a great opportunity for historical organizations to reach out to their communities.
