Spotlighted Project: Preserving Minnesota's Performing Arts Heritage

Recipient: University of Minnesota Libraries

Funding Amount: $159,205
Project Details
The Performing Arts Archive successfully digitized 1507 video and film objects from six collections: Theatre de la Jeune Lune (351 items); Guthrie Theater (418 items); Penumbra Theatre Company (276 items); James Sewell Ballet (61 items); Minnesota Dance Theatre (14 items); Minnesota Orchestra (387 items). The Performing Arts Archive is the central repository for Minnesota’s performing arts. All materials will be available for use in the Andersen Library Reading Room, and a significant percentage will be fully available online.

Field Note



Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum Opens
Five years in the making, the Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum, Minneapolis MN, opened Saturday October 19, 2013 and features paintings of nomadic life and photos of Somalia along with traditional rugs, musical instruments, ancient writing tablets and many artifacts from Somali daily life.
Twin Cities businessman Osman Ali, talking with Pat Gaarder, Deputy Director of the Minnesota Historical Society, has collected more than 700 items for the museum and says the idea of bringing the artifacts to Minneapolis came out of his desire to teach younger Somalis the story of nomadic life in Somalia.
