AASLH Seeks Session Proposals
American Association for State and Local History is holding their 2014 Annual Meeting in St. Paul MNSession Proposals are due November 15, 2013.
In the spirit of the theme "Greater than the Sum of Our Parts,"  the Program Committee seeks proposals that meet one or more of these seven goals:
  1. Share strategies for building sustainable networks that enhance resources and community impact
  2. Analyze a collaboration that met, exceeded, or fell short of expectations and share lessons learned
  3. Leverage local, national, and international initiatives and anniversaries to generate renewable partnerships and audiences
  4. Illustrate marketing and fundraising strategies—especially those that involved partner organizations and can be scaled or replicated
  5. Encourage community involvement and interest in our work
  6. Connect personal and community histories to larger themes and current concerns
  7. Demonstrate successful advocacy at the local, state, and national level
Preference is given to proposals that center on truly collaborative, innovative, replicable efforts that respond to the theme.
Now is the time if you ever wanted to present at a national convention. Demonstrate your professional knowledge and help showcase Minnesota by making this AASLH's best Annual Meeting ever.

Field Note

The competitive space between maintaining a brand and someone else's creative use can be challenging to discern. This is true of Bemidji's 1937 Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and now stars of MnSure's awareness campaign for the new state health insurance exchange. The campaign has Paul demonstrate some of the "10,000 reasons" to have health insurance, but his danger-prone antics caused Bemidji City Councillor Reed Olson to remark, "He's not Homer Simpson."

In the spirit of this discussion, check out the photo at the top and stay tuned to this newsletter over the course of the next year as some of Minnesota's larger-than-life residents Visit St. Paul to help us all get ready for the 2014 AASLH Conference.
