Disaster Assessment

Minnesota Historical Society seeks information from historical organizations affected by the June 2013 storms in the counties covered by the federal disaster declaration. These counties include: Benton, Big Stone, Douglas, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Grant, Hennepin, Houston, McLeod, Morrison, Pope, Sibley, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, Traverse, and Wilkin.

Email David Grabitske with information on types of damage, costs, and amounts not covered by insurance. The information will be used to help the legislature understand the scope of needs for historic resources as it potentially goes into special session. Please respond by August 20, 2013. Thank you.

Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants

Grants Updates
Award letters for the July 2013 small grants round will be mailed out within the next couple weeks, and grant agreements will follow shortly after. Remember that recipients of small Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants awards cannot start their projects until they receive authorization from the Grants Office, so send back your signed agreement forms as soon as possible. Contact Melinda Hutchinson with questions.

Mid- and large size grants are in review. Applicants will receive feedback at the end of August or early September. Revised grant applications are due back to the Grants Office before midnight on Friday September 27, 2013. Contact the Grants Office with questions.

Spotlighted Project: StEPs Assessment Program

Recipient: Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission
Funding Amount: $1,945
In an effort to focus on rebuilding the foundation of the Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission they applied for a grant to take part in the StEPs program offered by the American Association for State and Local History. With the help of a consultant who was hired to facilitate the process, their collection policy was rewritten, incorporating best practices. They prioritized collection management and were able to proceed with their inventory using the principles discussed. Audience identification helped them prioritize projects focusing on select groups rather than the general public.
