9 Nights of Music: Ellington Echoes
Big Band

  • Tuesday, July 18, 6:30-8:00
  • Minnesota History Center, St. Paul
  • FREE!

Nine Nights of Music, the Minnesota History Center's popular series of outdoor concerts continues with the swingin' sounds of Ellington Echoes. At the age of 84, local saxophonist Percy Hughes leads the Red Wolfe Memorial Band, Ellington Echoes to honor his former comrade, trumpeter and bandleader, Red Wolfe. Both played together, led their own bands for more than 40 years and performed and discussed jazz in hundreds of schools around the state of Minnesota.

Feel the beat, swing your partner and wear your favorite 40s outfit to model in a fashion parade and win great prizes! All in celebration of Minnesota’s Greatest Generation project that was launched by the Society last summer; a call to all Minnesotans to join together in the creation of a comprehensive body of resources-- stories, documents and objects to share with future generations.

Tapestry Folkdance Center instructors, Cindy and Terry Gardner provide the footwork and easy-to-follow lessons. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to spread out on the lawns. Picnics are welcome but food is also available from the Cafe Minnesota terrace grill. There is a nominal fee to park.

The series is co-sponsored by Tapestry Folkdance Center and funded in part by a gift from 3M.

Real Art, Real Stories: Drawings and Writings by children of the holocaust

Children Life in the ShadowsDrawing Life in the Shadows

  • Sunday, July 16, 2:00
  • Minnesota History Center, St. Paul
  • Reservations required

Pictures and writings by children of the Holocaust are poignant reminders of the human impulse to create. They are also vivid testament to future generations of both the sadness and the hope that characterized the lives of Holocaust children.

Dr. Elizabeth Baer will present an overview of children’s writing and poetry as recorded in diaries and on scraps or litter. These words are a moving illustration of how the Holocaust affected individuals who dreamed and suffered while paying witness to one of the darkest moments in human history.

Dr. Stephen Feinstein will explore the work of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, an artist and teacher who devised innovative techniques to help her young students at the Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp/ghetto overcome its dehumanizing regime and express their humanity. The children’s surviving works demonstrate how she empowered them to find light and express hope. The production of art in the process of genocide is also suggestive of the unique aspects of Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Dr. Baer is a Professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College. Dr. Feinstein is a Historian and the Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Minnesota, College of Liberal Arts.
