moving pictures: short films about minnesota's greatest generation

In August 2005, the Minnesota Historical Society marked the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II by launching the Minnesota's Greatest Generation Project, a comprehensive campaign to explore the life and legacy of Minnesotans who grew up amid the depression of the 1930s, came of age during World War II, and participated in the boom that followed in the wake of the War. The Greatest Generation Project explores how events at home and abroad affected their lives and created a legacy shared by all Minnesotans. The "Moving Pictures - Shared Stories of Minnesota's Greatest Generation" film initiative is one piece of the campaign to preserve these important stories. Filmmakers of all ages and abilities are invited to submit films 10 minutes or less in length. Any aspect of the life and legacy of an individual or a group from the Greatest Generation can be explored. The best films will receive cash prizes.

48 Hour Film Festival:
Weekend of June 9, Screenings June 13-15

During the weekend of June 9, filmmakers throughout the Twin Cities area will take part in the 48 Hour Film Project. The Project's mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. Through its festival/competition, the Project encourages filmmakers and would-be filmmakers to get out there and make movies. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers; emphasizing creativity and teamwork skills, and putting an emphasis on "doing" instead of "talking." Each team will draw the genre for its film out of a hat. In addition, a required character, prop, and line of dialogue will be announced.
All of the completed films will screen June 13-15 at the Riverview Theatre in Minneapolis.

Square Lake Solstice Film Festival:
Saturday, June 17, 1 pm - 1 am

The festival is held each year on a 14-acre hobby farm near Square Lake beach, 8 miles north of Stillwater and only 40 minutes from the Twin Cities. Bands perform on an outdoor stage beneath a parachute canopy with professional lighting and sound. Films are shown inside a rustic barn during the day and after dark next to the outdoor stage on a movie theater-sized screen.
