Festival Archive: Greatest Generation

From 2006 to 2008, the short film competition focused on the Greatest Generation. More than 140 original works were produced and more than $30,000 was awarded to top entries. Included in this annual mix of 5 awards was a category dedicated to the best exploration of the pivotal decades of the middle 20th century. Since 2006, the 1930s Depression, the war scarred 1940s and the 1950s boom years have all been explored.

2007 Festival Recap
"In conjunction with the Ken Burns Documentary - "The War", Twin Cities Public Television produced our second 60-minute program to coincide with the premiere of the Burns documentary. This program included 5 films selected from the 60 films submitted in 2007. "Prisoner #32,232" was later nominated for a Regional Emmy Award for best documentary."

FRITZ: The Walter Mondale Story Trailer
"The Opening Night of our 3rd annual festival featured the premiere of "Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story". The 75-minute documentary, profiling one of Minnesota's most accomplished members of the Greatest Generation, included rare footage, recently declassified papers and interviews" Directed by award-winning filmmaker Melody Gilbert"

Mr. Brown
Jim Brown grew up in the Twin Cities during the 1930s and 1940s. As an African-American, he was subjected to numerous insults, indignities and open discrimination. Yet, he persevered to become a Chief Engineer in the Military Sealift Command, an accomplished dancer, an author, father, grandfather and positive force in his community.

Coming Home
"Coming Home" tells the story of Bill Ehling, a World War II combat veteran who fought in the European theater. Through family photos, historical footage, and glimpses of his hometown, the film relates Bill's memories of war, struggle - and finally - of coming home.

A Satisfied Life
Ted Wryk, like others of his generation, experienced the Depression, World War II, and the post-war boom with a sense of commitment and purpose. This film explores how Ted's life has been shaped by these defining values, and how these values inspire successive generations to the ideal of a “Satisfied Life.”
