Satchel, about 1858
MHS Museum Collections, MC9877.5

The inscription inside this handmade satchel reads: "Uncle Ashley's satchel. He carried this on a stick over his shoulder when he came from Broomfield, Wisconsin, to Minnesota. He walked the whole distance." Samuel Ashley Higbee had moved first from New Hampshire to Wisconsin and lived for a time with some relatives. In 1858 he moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota. His family donated his pioneer satchel--and his story--to the Historical Society in 1960.
