Minnesotans have been recording the weather since October 1819, when the surgeon at Fort Snelling began taking readings every morning, afternoon, and evening. Each reading included the temperature; a characterization of the weather, such as "clear" or "cloudy"; the wind direction; and remarks on the force of the winds, intensity of the precipitation, or other interesting weather observations. When white settlers arrived in Minnesota, the weather quickly became a popular topic for letters, diaries, and newspaper reports. Read what the settlers wrote 150 years ago. Look for clues.
