Marie ---------------------------------------- Marie did not attend school. Her relationship to the elder Joseph Renville is unclear. The word "wife" appeared after her name in the 1850 census. However, in an 1856 sworn affidavit, Joseph stated that his first wife was a Mdewakanton Dakota Indian and that his second wife, Tenosia Armatender, was a Sisseton Dakota Indian whom he had married in 1839. The three young girls in the census record were not mentioned among the seven children listed in Renville's 1856 affidavit. Only Joseph, Jr., and Daniel appeared in both documents. Louise ---------------------------------------- Louise has an asterisk after her name, meaning that she attended school. Of the 47 eleven-year-old girls counted in the census, only 8 (19 percent) had gone to school within the year. Of all the children ages 6 to 16, only 14.3 percent had attended school. Julia ---------------------------------------- Julia did not attend school. She was one of 121 two-year-old girls counted in 1850.
