The Shelter Building is a T-shaped structure constructed with peeled logs with saddle-notched corners resting on a stone-faced concrete foundation. The main area of the shelter is 44' x 24' with a 12' by 16' projection to the rear for the kitchen. Both sections are covered with intersecting gable roofs. The main entrance features an 8' by 16' porch with a projecting shed roof supported by log posts.

The main shelter area features a massive centrally located split rock fireplace with an 84" split log mantel. A segmental arch caps the opening. Bolster logs support a massive truss system also constructed with logs. The kitchen area still retains four original cast-iron wood cook-stoves, which are placed in the rear wall of the fireplace. A 12" recess in the masonry above the stoves is supported by a series of corbels. The building retains its original plank doors and casement windows.

Except for minor changes in execution, the shelter is identical to one built at Lindbergh State Park.
