Historic Forestville Banner

Barn and river at Meighen home, October 1897 Barn at Historic Forestville

This is one of the oldest documented photographs of Forestville, taken from the wooden bridge that stood from 1888 to 1899. This "King's Post" style bridge replaced an earlier 1856 structure, which was destroyed by flooding. The photograph includes a view of Meighen's barn, built in 1894. The barn consisted of a centrally located hay mow, a dairy parlor to the north (left in photo) and horse stalls to the south (right). The barn remains today as part of the Historic Forestville site.

Note what appears to be a corncrib (ventilated storage building) behind the structure, as well as a board fence used to corral the many Percheron work horses needed for Meighen's large farming operation.

The structure north of the barn was probably the town cabinet shop, built in the 1850s and gone by 1950. Not much is known about this shop, except that it changed ownership several times before becoming a storage shed for the Meighen farm.
