John Foster and August Grabau, circa 1905
The Foster and Grabau names are synonymous with early Forestville, and these two men represent the second generation born in the town. In this postcard photograph, the man on the left is John Foster
and on the right is August Grabau, born in 1865. Both wear typical farm clothing from the turn of
the 20th century. Foster wears a wide-brimmed slouch hat, pullover striped cotton shirt, and
high-waisted striped trousers which are held up by a pair of simple cotton and leather suspenders.
He has a simple mustache, because full beards were uncommon among the post-Civil War generation.
Clean-shaven August Grabau wears a similar hat, solid-colored trousers, a knit collarless shirt, and
a wool six-button vest. The vest has four pockets and displays the pointed bottom found on more
fashionable late-19th century vests.
