Three Men Behind Steam Tractor, about 1905
In this postcard photograph, these Forestville farm workers suspended their work long enough to pose for a
photograph. None of the men has been identified to the Minnesota Historical Society, but the young man standing
next to the rear right wheel is believed to be from the Grabau family. At first glance one might
think this is a threshing scene, but the four men in front of the tractor are probably husking or
shredding corn, spewing the fodder out through the chute to a pole barn. This was done via a
"wind stacker" that consisted of a fan and a steel tube mounted over the shredder, which blew the
shredded fodder onto the stack away from the hot steam engine. Although the tractor's owner is
still a mystery, it closely resembles the one used at the Luedtke and Meighen Saw and Feed Mill.
(See other photographs.) Both Luedtke and Meighen had the financial resources to afford a piece of
machinery like this.
