Historic Fort Snelling: Virtual Tour
For most of this century, little remained of the frontier fort built in the early 1820s. When the Minnesota Department of Transportation proposed locating the still-existing Round Tower within an entrance loop of a new freeway interchange during the late 1950s, state citizens expressed strong opposition. Led by the Fort Snelling State Park Association, an ambitious program of archaeology, restoration, reconstruction and interpretation created Fort Snelling State Park and recreated Fort Snelling as it was in 1827.
