James J. Hill died in 1916,

“New York. As this is Grants birthday and the day New York dedicates its monument to him I was up early…we arrived in good time to see President and Mrs. McKinley, Vice President and Mrs. Hobart (ladies did not accompany husbands) Ex Pres. Cleveland…the procession, began to pass the Presidents Stand ... at one and continued to go by until 730 pm. Sixty thousand men! … I am very thankful that I had the privilege of witnessing such an occasion in New York where nothing is done by halves.” April 27, 1897
