Field Trips

The town of Mendota was one of the most important places in Minnesota in the 19th century. The center of the fur trade with the Dakota, Mendota was also the home of Henry Sibley, Minnesota’s first governor. Experience the fur trade in the cold store, walk the banks of the Mississippi and tour the furnished homes of Sibley and fellow fur trader Jean-Baptiste Faribault. Tours can be adapted for any grade, Kindergarten through college.

Historic Fort Snelling

Sibley tours are the perfect complement to a visit to Historic Fort Snelling. Discounts are available for booking both sites.

School visits are $3 per person. Special hands-on archaeology program available for groups for additional cost.

Voyageur’s Discovery Club

Bring your school-age care group to the Sibley House this summer to experience life as a voyageur for the American Fur Company! Your group will have a guided, hands-on experience that teaches them about the hard life of the voyageur’s. Students receive a special prize signifying their entry into the Voyageur’s Discovery Club.

Program Details

  • Fee: $4 per person
  • Program is 1 hour, optional self-guided river walk also available
  • Program is available June, July and August, Monday and Fridays only
  • Call 651-452-1596 to pre-register your group
  • Group size is limited to 75 per hour (150 per two hours with river walk)
  • Picnic area available
