1920s: Drammen Farmers' Club

Location: Lincoln Co. Hwy. 13, Drammen Township, Lincoln County
Built: 1921
Builder: Alfred Andersen
Listed on NRHP: December 12, 1980

The isolation that often marked rural life began to change in the early 20th century as rural free delivery, improved schools, automobiles and better roads made it easier for farmers to stay in touch. In addition to membership in such groups as the Grange, a 19th-century agrarian education and reform organization, farmers now began to establish social organizations and build township meeting halls that fostered a sense of community among rural residents.

Organized in 1920 to “improve its members, their farms and their community,” the Drammen Farmers' Club has served ever since as a community center for rural Lincoln County. This simple, gable-roofed hall was built to accommodate the club's initial membership of 108. Over the years the building has hosted countless wedding and anniversary parties, bridal showers, band concerts, dances and town board meetings.
